Math Anxiety

You study hard and take good notes. But when it comes time to write a test, or answer a question in class, your mouth goes dry, your heart starts hammering, your stomach starts doing backflips, and your mind draws a complete blank.  It's more common than you might think.

Math anxiety is mostly about the fear of not being able to do the math right, appearing or feeling stupid, and the fear of failure. This leads to frustration, lack of ability to think clearly and concentrate, and difficulty remembering how to solve math problems.

The End
Result?
math tutoring toronto

A downward spiral of declining academic performance, lower grades, decreased self-confidence and even more anxiety! Soon enough, the student may start labelling him or herself "not a math person,"  and will often feel like giving up and avoiding math like the plague.

Customized, student
centered approach
different learning styles

Everyone is capable of learning, but we all learn in different ways, and at different speeds. At Math Made Easy, lessons are delivered in a style that works for each individual student. Students are taught in their own language, in a way that is relevant to their everyday lives. Students need to be engaged in exploring, wondering, making connections, and thinking, rather than simply focusing on trying to memorize a bunch of boring rules and procedures.  All part of the Math Made Easy difference.

Where does Math
Anxiety come from?
math anxiety causes

It usually stems from unpleasant experiences in mathematics (confusion, frustration, embarrassment). Often math phobics have had math delivered in a one-size-fits all, teacher-centered approach that leads to limited understanding. Unfortunately, math anxiety is often due to poor teaching and poor experiences in math.

Understanding, NOT Memorization
overcoming math anxiety

When it comes to math, overreliance on memorization can cause problems.  A good memory helps, but, what if stress & anxiety (like during tests), make recall difficult? Right - trouble! Relying solely on rote memorization of steps is like walking a tight rope without a safety net. Understanding the math, and making connections between prior learning, new concepts, daily life, personal experience, and your individual learning style is your safety net. Actual understanding of the math is vital - and its more fun! Math Made Easy helps students realize they can understand and do the math, and anxiety can be overcome.
